1. Bay of
Bengal System enhanced Monsoonal Dynamics
A depression
in the Bay of Bengal increased the power of monsoon circulation in western
India, especially in Maharashtra, causing excessive rains that have been
continuous in various districts.

In Mumbai, 409 mm of rain fell in 36 hours, disrupting road, rail and air

were cancelled or delayed and commuters were stranded.
Closures
& Evacuations - Schools in Lonavla shut till August 21; schools, government
offices, advised to work from home in BMC. More than 1,100 persons were
evacuated at Thane and Palghar.
Flooding in
the State: Areas: Low lying areas such as Goregaon in vicinity of Oberoi Mall
experienced waterlogging, which once again met with popular outrage as
infrastructure failing being in focus. Rivers such as the Mithi have overflowed
and evacuated the residence of about 400 people.
Farming injuries: Crops on lakhs of hectares were damaged or covered in water, particularly in Vidarbha, exacerbating rural livelihoods

1. Early Warnings & Alerts: The color
coded messages (red/orange/yellow) have facilitated timely action. Two red
zones on the cards today are Pune and Mumbai as also their surrounding
districts
2. Evacuations & Relief Teams: NDRF
and SDRF are rescuing people stranded in flood-prone districts.
3. Transport: Railways: Railroads are
trying to maintain service. Officials are using additional buses, pumping water
and clearing up drains in order to make the traffic conditions ameliorated
4. School and Office Closures: Closures
are announced and work-at-home policies are implemented to restrict movements
of the people.
5. Communication Campaigns: Media alerts
invite people to remain indoors, not to travel and be guided by safety notices.
